I’ve been drawn to the mythology of the vampire since I first read Dracula when I was in middle school. I sought out other vampire books and stories from around the world but what fascinated me the most was how deep the myths went and how they permeated world cultures. Vampire myths can be found dating back to the foundations of civilization and almost every culture has their stories of the undead coming back to haunt the living. With so many different myths out there, I wanted to create a vampire story that was unique but still honoring the traditions that had come before.

With that in mind, I set out on a journey to write a chilling vampire horror story set in contemporary times blended with some of the great characters from mythology. I had in mind who I wanted for the main vampire, but I wanted some characters out of the mythic past to be along for the ride.

I started my novel centered around Lilith, who is thought by many to be the first vampire. In the Abrahamic religions, Lilith, according to some, was Adam’s first wife, before Eve. She was expelled from the Garden of Eden for being disobedient, and sentenced to walk the Earth. Versions of the story vary on why and how she was removed from the garden, but all seem to end with her becoming some kind of monster or vampire, immortal, and haunting humans in the night.

For the next character, I turned to Greek mythology and the legend of Pandora. Pandora, and the fabled Pandora’s Box, created an intriguing myth that I was able to blend in with vampire mythology. Pairing Lilith and Pandora together then separating them through the vampire war that is being fought among the shadows created an enduring legacy of two immortals, lovers, and a separation in time.

The main character of the story, Anna Negru, a sixteen-year-old dealing with the death of her parents, is carving out a path in this world and wants only to focus on herself and not the problems of the world around her. Anna is a spunky character who is loyal and true and wants to honor the legacy of her parents. Anna thinks her family is a normal family but soon learns that not everything is as it seems.

Anna’s grandfather, and legal guardian since her parents died, Davor Negru, is an archeologist and historian who specialize in early religious sites from around the world. When he goes missing, Anna worries for her grandfather, but as the story unfolds, Anna finds herself connected to mysteries that she never knew existed.
